Resilient South Africa

Category Upper Highway General

The reslience of South Africa and South Africans continues to amaze me.

After the worst period of civil unrest since the dawn of our democracy, it was amazing to see the speed at which South Africa has got back up and running.

The memories of that period will continue to linger, particularly for those that were badly impacted by the loss of loved ones or their livelyhood and also until the charred remains of some of the worst hit properties are cleaned up but, less than a week after the worst period much has normalised.

It was also pleasing to see how communities of all races rallied together to assist in protecting their areas and helping to clean up after the devastation.

The feeling amongst business owners appear to be mixed but certainly more positive than negative. There are some that feel that they have had enough and just want to liquidate what they can and move on. There are others that want to allow a bit more time to see how things settle but the vast majority that we have engaged with in the past week are moving forward and rebuilding or even expanding.

In the past week, we have had the pleasure of being able to assist some clients to find temporary accommodation whilst their premises are being repaired. We have also continued to work with other clients who are planning new developments in the Outer West and, despite the recent unrest, still see a bright future for their businesses in the areas of Hammarsdale, Cato Ridge, Camperdown and Lynnfield Park.

A number of clients even see additional opportunities and investors are still on the lookout for properties offering a good return.

We have been through a lot but the resolve of South Africans to overcome the challenges confirms that we all have lot to be grateful for.
